Lightyear Frontier Beginner Guide: Your First 10 Hours

A spoiler-light Lightyear Frontier beginner guide: first-hour checklist, early crops, water, fuel, mech upgrades and the mistakes that slow new farms down.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

The first ten hours of Lightyear Frontier decide how fast everything else goes. The game gives you a mech, a patch of alien soil and a delivery cannon, then quietly expects you to build a supply chain. This guide keeps the opening focused: clear ground, plant the right crops, secure water and fuel, and reach Automation Pipes without wasting a rebuild.

What should a new player do first?

Clear the slime around the landing site, plant Wheat, and build the Resource Delivery Cannon. Those three actions open the build menu, teach the soil system and start milestone progress. Everything else in the first hour is optional.

A first-session checklist:

Step Action Payoff
1 Scan the landing area with the mech Marks resources and slime patches
2 Clear slime with the Spike Saw Buildable ground, early drops
3 Plant Wheat in each soil type First harvest and rotation preview
4 Build the Delivery Cannon Milestone credit
5 Craft the Seed Shooter Faster replanting
6 Place a Water Reservoir Buffer for watering
7 Ship a mixed delivery Unlocks the next build tier

Do not sell every resource to hit a delivery target. Keep iron, coal and plant fiber; the first crafting chain needs all three.

Which crops should you plant first?

Start with Wheat, Polyberry and Rabbage. They cover all three soil types, mature in one to two days, and their products feed the early oil and food chains.

Crop Soil Grow time Best early use
Wheat Nitrogenic 1 day Fast delivery filler, seed stock
Polyberry Potassic 2 days Polyberry Oil, food
Rabbage Phosphoric 2 days Rabbage Oil, food
Caroot Potassic 3 days Caroot Oil, animal feed

Plant in strips of the same crop so the Field Harvest mode can clear a row in one pass. Keep one strip free for the next crop in the rotation. The crop list → has the full 1.0 table; the rotation chart → explains why Wheat → Rabbage → Caroot is the simplest loop.

Do not plant the entire farm with one crop. A single-type farm forces you to wait for one grow timer and throws away the yield bonus that comes from matching the mound type.

How do water and fuel work early?

Water and fuel are separate loops, and both fail silently if you ignore them.

  • Water: a Water Reservoir stores water. An Automated Water Pump fills it from a river or lake, and pipes carry water to Watering Drones and animal troughs. Without a reservoir, drones run dry mid-cycle.
  • Fuel: the mech and Combustion Generators burn oil. Plant Oil is the cheapest starter fuel at one energy per unit; Polyberry Oil gives two, Rabbage and Caroot give three.
  • Power: Energy is a global pool. A running Combustion Generator keeps crafting speed at the Energized rate, roughly two and a half times faster than an unpowered line.

The practical early build is one Reservoir, one Pump, one pipe to the farm, and one Combustion Generator next to the crafting area. Details and pipe rules are in water systems →. For fuel values per crop, see best oil for fuel →.

Which mech upgrades come first?

In 1.0 the mech has separate upgrade paths for tools, parts and transform modes. Spend the first upgrade materials on the tools you use every minute, not on cosmetic parts.

Recommended order:

  1. Spike Saw — faster slime clearing and tree felling.
  2. Seed Shooter — faster planting, then Seed Stacking at the higher marks.
  3. Resource Vacuum — less time chasing drops.
  4. Irrigation Hose — useful, but only after the Reservoir is stable.
  5. Trailblazer or Skyblazer — movement, once production is running.

Mod slots are fewer in 1.0 but each mod is stronger. Put a mod on the tool you hold most, not on a mode you transform into once an hour. The upgrade guide → lists the depot, the tool tracks and the 1.0 mod changes.

What are the most common beginner mistakes?

  • Building a giant base before Milestone 4. Automation changes the layout; wait until pipes are available.
  • Ignoring the soil type under each mound. Planting the same crop on the wrong soil wastes the rotation bonus.
  • Running the mech on Plant Oil forever. It works, but one oil press and a better crop pay for themselves quickly.
  • Skipping the Delivery Cannon queue. In 1.0 you can queue deliveries; use it instead of flying back after every harvest.
  • Moving the base twice. Pick a site with water and flat ground after the first few milestones, then commit. The base location guide → scores the three best sites.

Should you play co-op from the start?

Yes, if you have a partner. The world is shared, progression is shared, and a second player can run deliveries while the host farms. Crossplay works between Steam and Xbox, and the session supports up to four players. The co-op guide → covers invites and hosting; the crossplay page → covers platform compatibility.

One warning: the host's world settings decide the difficulty preset. Agree on Relaxed or Balanced before anyone builds a base.

FAQ

How long is the tutorial?

There is no separate tutorial level. The first delivery and the first build menu unlock serve as the tutorial, and they take roughly 30 to 60 minutes depending on how much you explore.

Can you play without automation?

Yes. Every milestone can be completed by hand. Automation only reduces the time spent shuttling materials and waiting on craft timers.

What is the best first delivery?

A mixed delivery of Wheat and Polyberry products. It uses two soil types, does not require oil processing, and gives enough credit to unlock the early build options.

Do crops need to be watered every day?

Watering Drones handle it once the Reservoir and pump are connected. Before that, the Irrigation Hose is the manual option; crops still grow without water, but slower and with lower yield.
