Lightyear Frontier Map: All Regions and Resource Zones
The Lightyear Frontier 1.0 map explained: five regions, what each one supplies, how big the world is, and how the Resource Scanner and stamps work.
The Lightyear Frontier 1.0 map has five regions: three from Early Access and two added with the update. The world is roughly 40 percent larger than the pre-1.0 map, and the map screen now includes a Resource Scanner, nameable stamps and live markers for animals and trailers.

What are the five regions?
| Region | Theme | Key resources | Crops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outset Grasslands | Temperate starting zone | Wood, Plant Fiber, Stone, Aluminum | Wheat, Polyberry, Rabbage, Caroot |
| Frostpeak Ridge | Cold mountains | Iron, Coal, Red Crystal | Honeybottle, Lumbloom |
| Hexagon Valley | Geometric badlands | Copper, Nickel, Yellow Crystal | Chromaize, Zappertwig |
| Sandswept Highlands | Desert plateau (1.0) | New minerals, ruins | New 1.0 crops |
| Hollow Marsh | Swamp between cliffs (1.0) | Marsh plants, Starfall Tree materials | New 1.0 crops |
The three core regions form a rough triangle around the starting grassland. Sandswept Highlands sits above the highland cliffs, and Hollow Marsh fills the low ground between them.
How big is the map?
The 1.0 world is about 40 percent larger than the Early Access map. The game does not publish a square-kilometer figure, so treat any exact number you see elsewhere as an estimate.
The practical size is better measured in travel time:
- Landing site to Frostpeak Ridge: a few minutes by mech, longer with a loaded trailer.
- Landing site to Hexagon Valley: a mid-length trip; bring fuel.
- Sandswept Highlands and Hollow Marsh: reachable early, but their content assumes late-game gear.
There is no traditional fast travel. The map, Skyblazer flight and the delivery cannon network are the intended travel tools. Skyblazer is fast but burns fuel, so use it for scouting and drive the delivery routes.
What does the map screen show?
The 1.0 map is a working tool, not a decoration:
- Resource Scanner. Scans for resource nodes you have discovered and marks them on the map.
- Stamps. Place a marker and add text, so a nickel deposit or a candidate base site stays labeled.
- Animals and trailers. Both now appear on the map, which makes ranch management and lost-trailer recovery much easier.
- Mission markers. Constructs and resources needed for the current mission are highlighted in the world and on the map.
The scanner is the single most useful unlock for exploration. Use it before every trip: it turns a blind drive into a route.
Which region should you visit first?
After the starting grassland, go to Frostpeak Ridge first. It supplies iron, coal and red crystal, the three materials that gate the mid-game crafting chain:
- Iron and coal make steel.
- Red crystal makes tool range, lock-on and water-tank upgrades.
Hexagon Valley is the second trip. It supplies nickel, copper and yellow crystal, which unlock electronics and the next tier of constructs. The nickel guide → covers the deposits.
Leave Sandswept Highlands and Hollow Marsh for after you have a stable base. Both are open from the start, but the desert region has hostile Floaters and the marsh is a long traversal.
Where should the map marker go?
Mark these five things as soon as you find them:
- Water. A river or lake near flat ground is the best base indicator.
- Iron and coal. They cluster in Frostpeak Ridge and feed steel.
- Red crystal. The deposits are sparse; a stamp saves a repeat search.
- Nickel. Mid-game electronics depend on it.
- A flat build site. Mark it before you commit, then compare with the base location guide →.
Nameable stamps are the reason this works. A marker called "iron + coal, 2 min from river" is worth more than a generic icon.
Is there an interactive map?
There is no official browser-based interactive map from the developers. The in-game map, the Resource Scanner and player-made stamps are the supported tools. Community map projects exist, but their region names and resource pins often predate 1.0.
For a static reference, the map resources page → lists every ore and egg by region. For base planning, the base guide → scores the three strongest sites.
FAQ
How many regions are in Lightyear Frontier?
Five in the 1.0 build: Outset Grasslands, Frostpeak Ridge, Hexagon Valley, Sandswept Highlands and Hollow Marsh.
Is the map procedurally generated?
No. The world is hand-built, and resource nodes respawn on timers rather than being randomized per save.
Can you fast travel?
There is no conventional fast-travel menu. The delivery cannon network, Skyblazer flight and the mech are the travel systems.
Do the new regions require finishing the story?
No. Both are physically reachable from the start of a 1.0 save, but the enemies and resource requirements are tuned for late-game players.
