Lightyear Frontier Nickel: Where to Find It and How to Farm

Where to find nickel ore in Lightyear Frontier, the fastest early route, how to farm deposits in Hexagon Valley, and what nickel is actually used for.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

Nickel is the first material that makes a new player stop and search. It is not in the tutorial clearing, it does not drop from slime, and the first electronics recipe that needs it arrives before most players have explored Hexagon Valley. Here is where it is and how to get enough.

Where do you find nickel in Lightyear Frontier?

Nickel comes from Nickel Deposits and Nickel Chunks in two areas:

  1. Eastern Outset Grasslands — near water, on sandy edges and riverbanks. This is the earliest and easiest source.
  2. Hexagon Valley — the region's primary nickel area, with more deposits but a longer trip.

The eastern grassland nodes are easy to miss because they sit at the boundary between grass and sand, not in the rocky areas where you expect ore. Follow the river east and scan the banks.

What does nickel look like?

Nickel deposits are metallic nodes with a cool grey-green tint. They are smaller than iron nodes and often sit in clusters of two or three. Nickel chunks on the ground are the same colour and can be picked up with the Resource Vacuum.

If you are scanning a new area, look for the pale green glint rather than a rock silhouette. The map's Resource Scanner will mark the node once you have discovered it, so a single visit is enough to make it a permanent map pin.

What is the fastest early nickel route?

  1. Leave the landing site and follow the river east.
  2. Scan the sandy banks for nickel chunks.
  3. Mine every deposit you find; do not skip the small ones.
  4. Return to base and process the ore in a Mineral Crusher.
  5. Stamp the cluster on the map before you leave.

The Mineral Crusher is the key step. Hand-breaking chunks gives less usable material than processing the ore, so a full inventory of raw nickel is not the same as a full inventory of nickel product. Build the crusher as soon as the milestone allows.

How do you farm nickel efficiently?

Nickel nodes respawn, so the best farm is a route, not a single node:

  • Clear the eastern grassland cluster on every trip to the river.
  • Combine the Hexagon Valley nickel run with copper and yellow crystal; the region supplies all three.
  • Keep a forward Storage Shed in Hexagon Valley once you have a trailer, so you are not hauling raw ore across the map every time.
  • Process ore at the crusher before storing it; raw ore is heavier and less useful.

A single forward camp with a crusher and a shed turns Hexagon Valley from a day trip into a supply line. The base location guide → covers forward camps.

What is nickel used for?

Nickel is a mid-game electronics material. It appears in:

  • Electronic components and wiring.
  • Mid-tier construct upgrades.
  • Parts of the mech upgrade tree.
  • Several automation components.

It is not used in steel; steel is iron plus coal. Do not confuse the two chains. The steel guide → covers the iron side.

Because nickel gates electronics rather than raw building, you rarely need hundreds of units. A stack of processed nickel is enough for most of the campaign; the bottleneck is finding the first twenty, not farming a thousand.

How much nickel should you keep?

Keep at least 30 processed nickel before you spend the rest on upgrades. That buffer covers the electronics tier and the first automation components without a second trip.

If you are short, check these three things before mining more:

  1. Did you process the ore in a Mineral Crusher?
  2. Did you check the eastern grassland banks, not just Hexagon Valley?
  3. Did you leave nickel in a shed with a filter that excluded it?

The last one is common in 1.0: a Storage Shed set to Accept only iron will reject nickel, and the overflow goes to your inventory or the ground.

FAQ

Is nickel rare in Lightyear Frontier?

It is uncommon, not rare. The eastern grassland has a small cluster, and Hexagon Valley has enough for the whole campaign. The difficulty is the trip, not the drop rate.

Can you buy nickel?

The merchant's stock is limited and rotates. Mining is the reliable source; do not plan a build around a merchant listing.

Does nickel respawn?

Yes. Deposits respawn after an in-game timer, so a stamped cluster is a reusable route rather than a one-time harvest.

What is the difference between nickel ore and nickel chunks?

Chunks are the loose pickups; ore comes from deposits. Both feed the same processing chain. The Mineral Crusher turns ore into usable material more efficiently than hand-breaking.
