Lightyear Frontier Crop Rotation Chart and Rules

The full Lightyear Frontier crop rotation chart: which soil each crop leaves behind, the fastest loop, the best oil loop and how to fix a field that drifted.

Crop rotation in Lightyear Frontier is not a hidden modifier. Every mound has a soil type, every crop has a matching type, and every harvest changes the mound in a predictable direction. Learn the direction once and you can plan a field that never wastes a planting.

What is the crop rotation rule?

The rule fits in two lines:

  • High-yield harvest → the mound moves to the next soil type in the loop Nitrogenic → Phosphoric → Potassic → Nitrogenic.
  • Mutated harvest → the mound moves to the previous soil type.
  • Normal harvest → the mound type does not change.

You get a high-yield harvest when the crop matches the mound. Planting Wheat in a Nitrogenic mound is a match; planting Wheat in a Phosphoric mound is not. That is the whole system.

What is the full rotation chart?

Each row starts with the crop planted in its matching soil.

Crop planted Matches soil High-yield leaves Mutation leaves Normal leaves
Wheat Nitrogenic Phosphoric Potassic Nitrogenic
Chromaize Nitrogenic Phosphoric Potassic Nitrogenic
Zappertwig Nitrogenic Phosphoric Potassic Nitrogenic
Rabbage Phosphoric Potassic Nitrogenic Phosphoric
Lumbloom Phosphoric Potassic Nitrogenic Phosphoric
Polyberry Potassic Nitrogenic Phosphoric Potassic
Caroot Potassic Nitrogenic Phosphoric Potassic
Honeybottle Potassic Nitrogenic Phosphoric Potassic

Read a row as: plant this crop in its matching soil, harvest well, and the next crop should be the one that matches the new type. Wheat leaves Phosphoric, so follow it with Rabbage; Rabbage leaves Potassic, so follow it with Caroot; Caroot leaves Nitrogenic, so follow it with Wheat.

What is the best crop rotation?

There is no single best rotation, because the goal changes. These three loops cover the useful cases.

The fast loop: Wheat → Rabbage → Caroot

Step Crop Soil at planting Grow time
1 Wheat Nitrogenic 1 day
2 Rabbage Phosphoric 2 days
3 Caroot Potassic 3 days
4 Wheat again Nitrogenic 1 day

Total cycle: six in-game days for three harvests. This is the best loop for players who want steady delivery credit and do not want to think about the field. It uses all three soil types and never needs Mulch.

The oil loop: Polyberry → Wheat → Rabbage

Step Crop Soil at planting Oil energy per unit
1 Polyberry Potassic 2
2 Wheat Nitrogenic 1
3 Rabbage Phosphoric 3
4 Polyberry again Potassic 2

This loop keeps an oil press fed without dedicating the entire farm to slow crops. Polyberry and Rabbage are the oil producers; Wheat is the filler that resets the soil on the way back to Potassic.

The value loop: Caroot → Wheat → Rabbage → Honeybottle

For late-game players with water and time, replace the fast crops with the four-day varieties where the soil allows:

  • Nitrogenic: Zappertwig or Chromaize.
  • Phosphoric: Lumbloom.
  • Potassic: Honeybottle.

The loop still runs N → P → K → N. The difference is that each mound stays occupied for four days, so you need roughly twice the mounds to keep the same delivery pace.

How do you lay out a rotating farm?

The simplest layout is three strips of equal size, one per soil type at the start:

  1. Plant strip A with Wheat, strip B with Rabbage, strip C with Caroot.
  2. Harvest strip A first; it becomes Phosphoric, so replant it with Rabbage.
  3. Harvest strip B; it becomes Potassic, so replant it with Caroot.
  4. Harvest strip C; it becomes Nitrogenic, so replant it with Wheat.

After the first cycle, every strip has moved to the next crop and the field is self-sustaining. The HUD shows the next soil type before you plant, so you can confirm the strip without a spreadsheet.

Use the Field Harvest mode to clear a strip in one pass, then the Seed Shooter to replant. Do not mix crop types inside a strip; it breaks the harvest rhythm and makes the rotation harder to read.

How do you fix a field that drifted?

Drift happens when you plant a crop in the wrong soil or harvest late. Three fixes:

  • Plant the matching crop for the current soil. Even one correct cycle puts the mound back on the loop.
  • Use Mulch. Mulch changes the mound type directly, which is faster than waiting for a mutation. It is the renamed fertilizer from Early Access; the new Fertilizer does not change soil.
  • Harvest a mutation deliberately. A mutated harvest moves the mound backward, which is useful when the field has overshot the type you need.

If the field looks empty rather than mis-typed, the problem is not rotation. See crops disappeared →.

Does Seed Stacking change rotation?

No. Seed Stacking adds multiple seeds to one mound for a yield bonus, but the harvest still counts as one crop and changes the soil by the same rule. Stacking is a yield multiplier, not a rotation bypass.

The stacking unlock comes from upgrading the Seed Shooter. It is most valuable on the four-day crops, where the bonus has time to compound.

FAQ

Does crop rotation increase yield?

Rotation keeps the mound on a type that matches your next crop, which is what produces the high-yield harvest. The bonus comes from matching the crop to the soil, not from the act of rotating.

What happens if you plant the same crop twice?

The second planting is on the new soil type, so it does not match and you get a normal harvest. The mound type stays where it is, and you lose the high-yield bonus for that cycle.

Is Mulch better than rotation?

Mulch is a correction tool, not a replacement. It costs resources; rotation is free. Use Mulch when a field has drifted, not as the default plan.

Do the four new 1.0 crops follow the same rule?

Yes. The soil loop is a world rule, not a per-crop exception. The new crops have their own soil types, and the HUD shows the match before planting.
