How Lightyear Frontier co-op works: four players, online only, Steam and Xbox crossplay, shared progress, host rules and the best way to split the work.
Lightyear Frontier co-op supports up to four players online, with crossplay between Steam and Xbox. There is no local split-screen mode. The host owns the world and its settings, and everyone shares the same farm, resources and milestone progress.
How many players can join?
Four, including the host. The Steam store describes the game as playing with "up to three friends", which is the same thing: one host plus three guests.

How do you start a co-op session?
- The host loads a world and opens it to multiplayer.
- The host invites players from the platform friend list or shares the session.
- Guests join from Steam or Xbox.
- Everyone spawns in the host's world.
The host must be online for the session to exist. If the host quits, guests are disconnected; there is no persistent server that keeps the farm running.
Is progress shared?
Yes. Milestones, deliveries, storage and the farm are all part of the host's world. A guest's contribution counts toward the same progress, and the host's save is the one that persists.
What is not shared:
- Each player's achievement unlocks are tied to their own account.
- Each player's mech progression may be tracked per player; check the Mech Depot when you join a new world.
- Guest inventories are session-bound; do not treat a guest's pockets as permanent storage.
The practical rule: build in the host's world, and let the host handle the final deliveries if you want the save to be the canonical one.
Which difficulty applies?
The host's world setting applies to everyone. Guests cannot override it, and the preset does not change when someone joins or leaves. Agree on Relaxed or Balanced before the first session; switching later may require a new world.

Does co-op work across Steam and Xbox?
Yes. Crossplay is supported between Steam and Xbox in the 1.0 build. The host can be on either platform, and guests can join from the other.
You do not need a separate account. Platform friends and session invites are enough. The crossplay page → covers PS5 and Switch 2, which are not supported.
How should four players split the work?
A four-player farm works best when each player owns a lane:

Rotate roles every session or two so nobody gets stuck on the least popular job. The courier role is the most important in the first hours, because delivery credit gates the build menu.
Do not have all four players plant at once. The Seed Shooter's coverage overlaps, and the field becomes a patchwork that is hard to rotate.
What are the common co-op problems?
- Guest cannot join. Check the game version; a 1.0 host and a pre-1.0 guest cannot connect.
- Crops look different for each player. The host's world is authoritative; rejoin to resync.
- Progress did not count. Confirm the action happened in the host's world, not in a guest's own save.
- Host quit and the session ended. There is no dedicated server; the host must stay online.

FAQ
Is there local co-op?
No. Lightyear Frontier is online co-op only; there is no split-screen or shared-screen mode.
Can guests play without buying the game?
No. Every player needs a copy on Steam or Xbox. The game is not on Game Pass, so there is no subscription route.
Does the host need to stay online?
Yes. Sessions are host-based, and quitting the game ends the session for everyone.
Do achievements unlock for guests?
Yes, for actions they perform. Progress counters are shared in the host's world, but each player's achievement unlock is tied to their own account.
