Lightyear Frontier Best Oil for Fuel: Ranked by Energy
Every Lightyear Frontier crop oil ranked by fuel value, with energy per grow day, the best early and late picks, and how the Oil Presser changes the math.
The best oil for fuel in Lightyear Frontier depends on whether you are measuring energy per unit or energy per grow day. Honeybottle and Lumbloom win the first contest; Rabbage wins the second. This page gives both rankings and the press chain that turns either into a working fuel supply.

What are the fuel values of every oil?
Values are fuel units per item. The game data lists some values at double; the mech and generators consume the smaller, effective number shown here.
| Oil | Fuel per unit | Source crop | Grow time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refillite | 1 | Mined deposit | — |
| Plant Oil | 1 | 5 Plant Fiber | — |
| Polyberry Oil | 2 | Polyberry | 2 days |
| Rabbage Oil | 3 | Rabbage | 2 days |
| Caroot Oil | 3 | Caroot | 3 days |
| Chromaize Oil | 4 | Chromaize | 3 days |
| Zappertwig Oil | 4 | Zappertwig | 4 days |
| Honeybottle Oil | 5 | Honeybottle | 4 days |
| Lumbloom Oil | 5 | Lumbloom | 4 days |
| Coilvine Oil | 6 | Coilvine | 4 days |
| Rabberry Oil | 8 | Mutated crop | 2 days |
| Chromoot Oil | 11 | Mutated crop | 3 days |
| Lumtwig Oil | 15 | Mutated crop | 4 days |
| Honeyvine Oil | 20 | Mutated crop | 4 days |
The mutant oils at the bottom are the best fuel in the game per unit. They are also rare, because they require a mutated harvest. Treat them as a bonus, not a plan.
Which oil is best per unit?
Honeyvine Oil at 20 fuel per unit is the single best fuel item, followed by Lumtwig at 15 and Chromoot at 11. Among the non-mutated oils, Honeybottle and Lumbloom tie at 5, then Coilvine at 6.
Per-unit value matters when storage or hauling is the bottleneck. A stack of Honeybottle Oil carries five times the energy of a stack of Plant Oil, which is why late-game players switch even when the grow time is worse.
Which oil is best per grow day?
Divide fuel by grow time:
| Oil | Fuel per day | Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Rabbage Oil | 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5 | 1 |
| Chromaize Oil | 4 ÷ 3 = 1.33 | 2 |
| Honeybottle Oil | 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25 | 3 |
| Lumbloom Oil | 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25 | 3 |
| Polyberry Oil | 2 ÷ 2 = 1.0 | 5 |
| Zappertwig Oil | 4 ÷ 4 = 1.0 | 5 |
| Caroot Oil | 3 ÷ 3 = 1.0 | 5 |
This is the ranking that matters for a fuel farm. Rabbage produces the most energy per mound-day, and it is available in the starting region. A Rabbage field with an Oil Presser is the best early fuel setup in the game.
Honeybottle and Lumbloom still deserve a place: their per-unit value means fewer trips and less storage, and they fit the Potassic and Phosphoric slots in a rotation.
What is the best early fuel?
Use Plant Oil for the first few hours, then switch to Rabbage Oil as soon as you have a press.
- Plant Oil costs five Plant Fiber and produces one fuel. It is renewable and free, but the ratio is poor.
- Polyberry Oil is the natural second step: two fuel per crop, two-day growth, and Polyberry is one of the first seeds you find.
- Rabbage Oil is the first genuinely efficient fuel: three per crop, two-day growth, same region.
Do not build a Combustion Generator before you have a press. A generator burning Plant Oil is a fiber sink that produces less energy than the mech spends harvesting the fiber.
What is the best late-game fuel?
Two answers:
- For a fuel farm: Rabbage, because it wins on energy per day and the seeds are cheap.
- For a mech on a long trip: Honeybottle or Lumbloom Oil, because five fuel per unit means fewer refuels.
If you have a mutation pipeline, Honeyvine Oil at 20 per unit is worth keeping for boss fights, long flights and the Skyblazer. Do not build the farm around it; build around Rabbage and treat mutations as surplus.
How does the Oil Presser change the math?
The Oil Presser converts one crop into one oil. The Presser II processes five crops per batch and takes two minutes; the 1.0 build adds Oil Presser III, which is the tier to aim for once your farm is stable.
Three rules for the press line:
- Feed it from a filtered Storage Shed, not by hand.
- Output the oil into a second shed; do not let the press back up.
- Put the press next to the generator it feeds, so the pipe run is short.
The automation guide → has a working press layout. The crop rotation chart → shows how to keep Rabbage in the Potassic slot without breaking the soil loop.
Does anything reduce fuel use?
Yes. The Eco Driving coziness buff cuts fuel consumption by 20 percent while it is active. It is one of the homestead buffs added in 1.0, and it stacks with careful route planning: a delivery loop that avoids steep climbs saves more than any single upgrade.
Skyblazer flight is the biggest fuel sink in the game. Use it to scout, then drive the delivery route.
FAQ
Is Plant Oil worth using?
Only for the first hour. Five Plant Fiber for one fuel is a poor ratio; a single Rabbage crop produces three fuel in two days.
What is the best oil for the mech?
Honeybottle or Lumbloom Oil for long trips, because five fuel per unit reduces refuel stops. For everyday use, Rabbage Oil is cheaper per day.
Can you burn crops directly?
No. Crops must be pressed into oil first, except for the oils that drop directly from mutated harvests.
Do generators use the same fuel values?
Generators burn Fuel and use the same energy scale. A generator fed by Rabbage Oil runs longer than one fed by Plant Oil, which is why the press line pays for itself.
